Pre-match briefing

Welcome back to another week at The Gameplan. Look, we love sharing sports news with y’all, but I think it’s time to take a moment and talk about world news.

A Flaming Hot Cheeto shaped like the pokémon Charizard was auctioned for $87,840. $90,000 for a Cheeto. This has to be a social experiment.

To be fair, it does look surprisingly accurate. Anyways, back to sports:

Scout’s Overview
📡 🚨 Weekly Sports Radar: Death Diving

Death diving, or Dødsing, is an extreme diving sport that originated in Norway. It involves athletes jumping from 10 to 150-meter-high platforms and performing acrobatic stunts before landing in the water in a controlled belly flop.

Unlike traditional diving, where the goal is to minimize splash and execute perfect form, death diving is about style, courage, and theatrics. Scoring is based on four key criteria: Form & Style, Creativity, Commitment, and Splash & Impact.

🏋 Athlete of the week: Ryan Peake

Photo: Paul Shire

Ryan Peake is an Australian golfer who recently won the 2025 New Zealand Open, securing a spot in the British Open.

Fun fact: He used to be an Australian gang member- He was convicted of a five-year prison sentence before turning it around and returning to golf in 2022. What an inspiration.

🏟️ Venue of the week: Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece, is the world's only stadium built entirely of marble and hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

Fun Fact: It was originally built in 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games and restored almost 2000 years later to host the revival of the Olympics.

🧤 Fit Check: US Olympic Skateboarding 2024

Nike rose to the occasion to make the first-ever Olympic skateboarding jerseys for the USA, France, and Brazil. They had sustainability in mind: the kits for all 3 countries are made of 100% recycled polyester. The designer mentioned that the kits were inspired by American landscapes and basketball jerseys.

🗞️ In case you were injured:

  • The US is offering a $10 million reward for the arrest of a former Olympic snowboarder who is wanted for running a drug trafficking network

  • Every athlete hates unsportsmanlike behaviour, so I know you’ll hate this: A teen athlete bashed an opponent’s head with a baton during a track race

🎯 In over-time:

  • PSG had 22 shots on target vs. Liverpool but couldn't score. Watch this Spanish commentator burst into song after Liverpool’s last-minute winner!

  • A Chess Grandmaster offered bounties to any high-rated chess player in a tour he’s calling Hans Niemann Against The World. Who said chess doesn't have any drama?!

This guy was playing professional basketball before I was even born. Is he the goat?
