Pre-match briefing

I want to start this week with a bit of motivation:

A reporter asked Giannis Antetokounmpo if he considered this season to be a failure. This was his reply:

“Do you get the promotion every year on your job? No, right? It’s not a failure. It’s steps to success, Michael Jordan played 15 years, won six championships. The other nine years were a failure? No, exactly.”

“There’s no failure in sports. You know, there’s good days, bad days. Some days you are able to be successful. Some days you are not. Some days it’s your turn, some days it’s not your turn. And that’s what sports is about. You don’t always win.”

Besides being a perfect answer to failure, it’s also a big reminder for all athletes and humans out there: some days you win, some days you don’t- doesn’t mean you’re a failure.

📡 🚨 Weekly Sports Radar: Artistic Swimming

Lee Jin-man / AP Photo

Artistic Swimming, or Synchronized Swimming, is a hybrid sport that blends swimming, dance, and gymnastics into choreographed routines performed in water, set to music. Athletes execute intricate formations, synchronized movements, and acrobatic lifts, all while maintaining elegance and precise timing.

Judges evaluate execution, choreography, and the ability to stay in perfect harmony with teammates and the music. Originally known as water ballet, artistic swimming first gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s in Hollywood films. It became an Olympic sport in 1984, initially with solo and duet events before evolving into team competitions.

🏋 Athlete of the week: Lindsey Vonn

Lindsey Vonn is was a retired American alpine ski racer and one of the most successful female skiers in history, with four overall World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal.

Fun fact: This season, she came back out of retirement and became the oldest female Alpine skier to make the podium of a World Cup race!

🏟️ Venue of the week: Saint-Raphaël (Cliff Diving)

Romina Amato / Red Bull Cliff Diving

Red Bull Cliff Diving at Saint-Raphaël takes place off the edge of volcanic red rock formations at Cap Dramont, where athletes launch themselves 27 meters (88 feet) into the Mediterranean.

🧤 Fit Check: Wayne Mardle Jersey: Hawaiian shirt

Wayne Mardle was a successful darts player. His trademark: a classic Hawaiian shirt. This earned him his nickname "Hawaii 501" in 2000. The number 501 is based on the TV series "Hawaii 50," which Mardle turned into a 501 for his nickname. Sometimes in bright orange, now and then in bright blue or now and then in a rich green: Mardle set himself no limits about the color scheme of his Hawaii shirts. He was one of the first players to cause a sensation on the professional tour because of his dazzling outfit.

📊 Analyst’s Corner:

This week, the Boston Celtics became the most expensive sports team in the world, being sold for an alleged $6.1 billion. Let’s look at the 5 most expensive sports teams in the world:

  1. Boston Celtics (2025) – Purchased for $6.1 billion

  2. Washington Commanders (2023) – Acquired for $6.05 billion

  3. Chelsea Football Club (2022) – Sold for approximately $5.3 billion

  4. Denver Broncos (2022) – Purchased for $4.65 billion

  5. Phoenix Suns and Mercury (2023) – Acquired for $4 billion

According to Forbes' 2024 valuations, the most valuable teams are:

  1. Dallas Cowboys (NFL) – $8 billion

  2. New York Yankees (MLB) – $7.1 billion

  3. New England Patriots (NFL) – $6.9 billion

  4. Los Angeles Rams (NFL) – $6.2 billion

  5. Manchester United (EPL) – $6 billion

It’s insane how much American sports dominate- the two teams that are not from America, Chelsea and Manchester United, are both owned by American investors.
