📡 🚨 Weekly Sports Radar: Jugger

Jugger is a high-intensity sport that blends elements of rugby and martial arts. Players are divided into two teams of five, with most team members equipped with padded weapons to duel and disable opponents, while a single unarmed player, called the "qwik," races to take a ball and score by placing it into the opposing team's goal.

A match is won when a team successfully scores more points than the opponent by delivering the ball into the mal during a set number of "thirds" (like periods). What’s crazy is that Jugger was originally inspired by the 1989 dystopian movie The Salute of the Jugger, after which fans of the film in Germany brought the game to life in the early 1990s.

🏟️ Venue of the week: The Floating Green

Okay, okay, imagine you’re playing golf and then you realise your next green is slowly floating away from you. The Floating Green at Coeur d'Alene Resort is the world’s only movable, floating golf hole. It’s set on a lake and adjusted daily to challenge players with varying distances.

🧤 Fit Check: Saskatchewan ‘Rush Reimagined’ 2025

This Lacrosse uniform, designed by a local Saskatchewan illustrator, Isaac Thomas, is beautifully executed. The designer chose the flowers because they're all native to Saskatchewan, specifically, the prairie lily in the centre.

After the team wore the jerseys on March 29th this year, the club auctioned the sweaters with proceeds going towards ensuring a healthy and vibrant river valley in the Saskatoon area.

📊 Analyst’s Corner:

2 weeks ago, we looked at the top 10 highest-paid athletes in the world. We had derived the numbers from Forbes’ top 50 highest-earning athletes list, and something we noticed is that there are no women athletes in the top 50. Let’s break it down:

  • Number of Women in the top 50 this year: 0

  • One of the highest-paid athletes is Coco Gauff, who earned $34.4M in 2024. She still missed the Forbes top 50 by $19.2M

  • The cutoff to enter the top 50 in 2025: $53.6M

  • Highest-earning female athletes ever:

    • Naomi Osaka (2021): $57.3M

    • Serena Williams (2021): $45.9M

    • Coco Gauff (2024): $34.4M

  • This means that from the highest-earning female athletes ever, only one would make it into the top 50 of 2025
