Pre-match briefing

Welcome back to The Gameplan. I can’t even lie, there’s too many sports going on right now. Thankfully, I got you guys with 20 more sporting events in the Sporting Calendar this week. What struck me was that there’s 10 whole world championships going on right now, ranging from World Athletics Championships to World Armwrestling Championships.Let’s dive into Week 43 at The Gameplan.

Scout’s Overview
📡 🚨 Weekly Sports Radar: Bike Trials

Bike trials is a cycling discipline where riders navigate challenging obstacles like rocks, logs, and platforms using balance and control, aiming to complete the course without touching the ground with their feet. Like, imagine how hard parkour already is, and then add the whole bikes thing into the mix.

🏋 Athlete of the week: Tokito Oda

Tokito Oda is a Japanese wheelchair tennis player who became the youngest-ever world No. 1 in men’s singles at just 17 years old. By age 19, he has already won all four Grand Slams and the Paralympic gold medal, completing the career Golden Slam.

🏟️ Venue of the week: Ariake Sports Center

The Ariake Sports Center is a community sports complex in Tokyo’s Kōtō ward, offering facilities like swimming and martial arts, it also won 2020 architecture awards in Sports & Recreation.

🧤 Fit Check: Memphis Grizzlies Throwback 24/25

In celebration of the franchise's 30th anniversary, the Memphis Grizzlies dropped a throwback uniform from the 1995-2001 period, when the franchise still belonged to Vancouver (later relocated to Memphis).

This teal color, just by itself, separates this jersey from other jerseys. It’s beautiful. Additionally, the ‘GRIZZLIES’ font in bold right across the chest is perfect alongside the funky patterns around the collar and sleeves. This jersey has to be one of the best basketball uniforms out there.

From the bench
🗞️ In case you were injured:

  • New Zealand have maintained an impressive 31-year unbeaten record against South Africa in Rugby, despite South Africa having the most rugby world cups in this era.

  • This season’s #2 driver Alex Marquez finally won a MotoGP Grand Prix, overcoming the #1 driver’s run of seven wins in a row. The #1 he defeated? His own brother.

  • Benoit Saint-Denis went from protecting the French president & fighting terrorists to joining the UFC. I know who I’m betting on.

🎯 In overtime:

  • Did you know Lewis Hamilton, Kevin Durant, and Travis Kelce all go to the same barber? In fact, most of your favorite athletes probably go to one of these barbers.

  • Watch this insane high-jump-backflip-superhero-landing baseball catch

  • Tomomi Nishikubo managed cross a body of water by jumping on a series of metal poles. Normal stuff right? Wrong. He did it on his bicycle.
